About the farm
We are located on the tiny island of Isle la Motte in Lake Champlain, just a few miles south of the Canadian border. Isle la Motte is the oldest settlement of French and English in all of Vermont. The island is known for having some of the oldest fossils in the world, and its position between the Saint Lawrence and the Hudson made it an important staging ground during the revolutionary war.
The island has a microclimate distinct from the geography just a few miles either east or west. Its agricultural heritage is still visible in the many open fields and barns scattered about. According to local history, the land in this portion of the island was once part of a large apple orchard owned by the Holcomb family.
When we discovered the property, it was being used to raise elk. The clerk at the Country Store would refer to it like a landmark for tourists or fishermen that had stopped to ask for directions. The Old Elk Farm name just stuck around.
While still a work in progress, the property has made a great hobby farm for gardening and beekeeping. It has a nice view of the lake and features many mature fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, and a small pond. We have many wildlife visitors including rabbit, turkey, and deer.
