About the Old Elk Farm
Old Elk Farm was created out of our concerns for endangered pollinators and wildlife, and as a place to practice gardening in a manner that helps maintain clean water, fertile earth, and a vibrant ecosystem. This site allows us to share our hobbies and passions with others. It is our platform to advocate for issues that are important to us, promote community events and favorite places, and inspire others to start planting for the pollinators in their own gardens.

Isle la Motte; crown jewel of the islands
Isle la Motte is not connected by State Route 2 like the other Champlain Island towns, so it often seems to get forgotten about as one of them. There is only one road on and off connecting to a back road from the Alburgh peninsula. The island is very quiet and out of the way. We were drawn here for its tranquility and bucolic charm, its unique geology, and its noteworthy place in American history.

Taking time to smell the roses
Some years ago, we had the good fortune to acquire a lakeside cabin not far from here. It helped us realize that we really loved spending time around the lake. We soon left busy careers and big city life behind to settle here permanently and start a new chapter together. Isle la Motte has a vibe that connected with us, and this island provides a simpler and relaxed lifestyle we haven’t needed a vacation from. We have not regretted a moment since.

Home is where the heart is
We discovered this secluded woodland homestead formerly used to raise elk, which is where our Old Elk Farm name comes from. It has a vernal pond, a view of the lake and the Green Mountains, and simple, rugged lodging from which to brave the icy island winters. A favorite ski mountain is always in view. Beth knew right away that we had found our home.
